Video: Jamming On Green Dolphin Street

A quick post today – this is a video of yours truly jamming on this classic jazz standard by Bronisław Kaper & Ned Washington, Green Dolphin Street. I thought that you might be interested to check this out.

Following on from the recent post I released on chord melody guitar playing, this video is an example of how you can apply some of the concepts I covered in that lesson.

I’ve been very inspired lately by Lenny’s Breau’s approach to chord melody and chord soloing, so I’m sure you’ll hear some of his ideas coming through in this video ;-)

Lenny used a lot of 3rds and 7ths voicings in his soloing, which are very useful if you need to quickly grab chord voicings if you are doing a fast-moving chord solo or chord melody.

      1. Awesome Gerry. After 50 years of being a strummer at get togethers and such, I have recently been awakened to the absolutely beautiful sounding jazz voicings. I subscribed and am really, really impressed with your teaching style. Thx pal!

    1. I love the clarity in your note choices. Impressive stuff indeed. Cant wait for a day when I will be able nail down jazz like that.

  1. holy crap, that is some awesome playing!! Very inspiring, this is what kids should do when they stay up all night (I have officially turned into my dad)

  2. Met Lenny many times here in Ottawa Ont. Canada. He played at a coffee house, L’ Hibou. Got to interview him for local university station. Sat up all night and watched him work magic on my 1957 Gibson ES-175 D. Incredible chord voicings, harmonics, finger dexterity. Loved Bill Evans piano style and arrangements, wanted to emulate them on the guitar. I still have three narrow thumb picks he gave me. Loved Gerry Reed as well. A true genius on guitar ?

    1. Wow–I met a man here in my area that knew Lenny in winnapeg. Lenny was a genius. Some guitar players (not naming names)—they are truly awesome, but I understand what they do, I just can’t do it. Project out a hundred years of practice, and yes, maybe I could do that. With Lenny, I have no clue what he’s even doing a lot of the time.

  3. Hello, thank you very much for the video,i like the arrangement but also i’m surprised from the sound of the guitar,i see it’s a Yamaha
    Pacifica,but i don’t see the model,can you descrive me?

Very Cool Stuff! Noticed you didn’t use a pick or even a jazz box. Goes to show what you can do with a lot of talent and practice. Can’t even imagine playing something like that as my old fingers would never make the stretch , not to mention the movement. Very nice sound . Remember years ago seeing a guy playing jazz on a Tele in a book store and was blown away. In my early ignorance always thought of those guitars as sort of twang boxes , but roll off the treble and you can play anything. Again, very nice!

  5. Wonderful playing Greg. As a beginning jazz guitar player, this really inspires me to keep on practicing and learning from you. Great work Greg.
