Course Description

Learn Pat Martino’s approach to fluid, sophisticated minor lines, then put them to work on one of the most requested tunes in jazz.

This two-part course gives you the technique and the application in one package: the clarity and structure behind Martino’s seamless double-time playing, plus a complete breakdown of Sunny, the Bobby Hebb classic that shows up at every jam session.

Part 1: Minor Double Time Lines

Guest Instructor Stuart King has spent years studying and teaching the Martino approach, and his specialty is making advanced concepts genuinely accessible to players at your level.

Stuart shows you how to build those long, flowing minor lines that seem to go on forever without losing their direction or musicality.

You’ll learn position-shifting techniques that keep lines smooth at any tempo, chromatic approaches that add sophistication and forward motion, substitution concepts that give you freedom over minor harmony, and the practical secrets to connecting phrases seamlessly—no awkward stops or hesitations.

Stuart gives you a complete solo study that brings all these ideas together in musical context, Real vocabulary you’ll use, not just fingerboard exercises.

Part 2: Sunny

Then you take everything you’ve learned and apply it to Sunny, the groove-based standard everyone requests, with minor harmony that’s perfect for showcasing your new vocabulary.

You’ll get the melody with authentic phrasing, smart comping approaches for the tune’s infectious rhythm, complete harmonic analysis so you understand what’s happening under the hood, and a solo study specifically designed to demonstrate your double-time lines in action.

Learn the technique. Master the tune. Walk into your next jam session with both confidence and vocabulary that actually sounds like jazz.
